Back in December of last year, I went over to Hollywood to record a brand new showreel with the hopes of entering a new marketplace. That marketplace was the wonderful world of TV promos, and perhaps more importantly, it’s US TV promos which are of particular interest to me.
For those of you not familiar with what a promo is, it’s essentially a lot like a trailer for a forthcoming show. This means that the style of read means to reflect the tone of the show in question – a voice typically associated with horror shows is unlikely to be letting kids know that a new Spongebob is coming up! Although to be fair, sometimes Patrick can go a little dark.
Add to that the fact that TV channels themselves like to work with particular voices which reflect their brand, and it becomes quickly obvious that in order to break into this market, I’ll need a particularly powerful calling card.
